What You Should Know About Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are an incredible tool for treating the skin! As we age, many of us experience hyperpigmentation from years of sun damage, rough skin texture, fine lines, and wrinkles, and crepey skin. Chemical peels are a safe, easy, and cost effective way to improve common skin issues.

At AceCosm, we strive to provide high quality, innovative, chemical peel solutions!

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a process in which a chemical solution is applied to exfoliate the surface layers of the skin, revealing new, baby smooth skin. With a light or medium peel, a series of several peels is recommended for optimal results.

Chemical peels are used to treat wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and scars on the face and body. They can be done alone or combined with other aesthetic procedures. Chemical peels can be done at different depths, from light to deep. Deeper chemical peels offer more dramatic results but also come with more risks and require more down time. A common misconception is that deeper peels produce better results. The truth is, less aggressive peels done in a series produce beautiful results, with less risk and little to no down time.

What is a series of peels?

A series of peel treatments refers to peels done at regular intervals to improve results. For those who have minimal sun damage or aging issues, a series of 2 to 3 monthly peels may be enough to get optimal results. When doing a series of peels, improvement can be seen with each treatment. For those who have more advanced sun damage and visible signs of aging, a monthly or bi-weekly series of 6 to 8 treatments may be necessary to address the more visible signs of damage to the skin. Treatments done in series allow for a safe and gradual way to improve the skin with incredible results and less down time.

Types of chemical peels

The four most common types of chemical peels are AHA peels, BHA peels, TCA peels, and Phenol peels. AHA and BHA peels are classified as light chemical peels, whereas TCA peels are defined as medium-depth peels and Phenol peels are labeled as deep peels. Phenol peels can be very dangerous if not done properly and should only be done under medical supervision.

How do chemical peels work?

Chemical peels work with the help of acids which raise the acidity and the pH of the skin to around a 3.8 pH level. Normally, skin has a pH of around 5.5, and changing the pH level chemically loosens the cells that form the “glue” between dead skin and healthy skin. With that bond chemically loosened, exfoliation occurs as dead skin is removed to reveal beautiful healthy skin underneath. This process promotes the growth of new, healthy skin cells.
