What is SAXENDA?
Saxenda (liraglutide) is an injectable used for weight loss and maintenance. It’s primarily intended for adults who are either obese or overweight and dealing with health issues related to their weight. Saxenda should be used with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
Key Features
- Works by lowering appetite, slowing gastric emptying which makes you feel full for longer and therefore you decrease your calorie intake.
- Is similar to a hormone that occurs naturally in the body and helps control blood sugar, insulin levels, and digestion.
- Is an injection given once a day under the skin (subcutaneous) from a multi-dose injection pen.
Quantity and Administration
The recommended dose of Saxenda is 3 mg daily. It is initiated at 0.6 mg per day for one week. In weekly intervals, the dose is increased until a dose of 3 mg is reached.
Here is a typical week-by-week plan:
Week 1: 0.6 mg daily
Week 2: 1.2 mg daily
Week 3: 1.8 mg daily
Week 4: 2.4 mg daily
Week 5 and forward: 3.0 mg daily.
