Preparation:

• Alcohol wipe
• Sterile 2 x 2 gauze pad
• New needle and syringe
• Cotton ball

Administration Sites:

• Hip
• Upper arm (depending on muscle size)
• Buttocks

Procedure:

1. Confirm correct medication and dosage.
2. Thoroughly wash and dry hands.
3. Locate and clean injection site with alcohol wipe.
4. Remove needle cap.
5. Hold muscle around the site.
6. Insert needle straight into muscle at a 90-degree angle.
7. Inject medication.
8. Withdraw needle straight out.
9. Apply pressure with cotton ball.

• Tourniquet for vein identification
• Local anesthetic for numbing the injection site
• Needle for initial puncture
• Catheter tube to maintain vein access
• Access cap for medication administration

1. Inject a needle into the person's vein.
2. Advance a small plastic catheter over the needle into the vein.
3. Withdraw the needle, leaving the catheter in place.
4. Apply an access cap to the catheter for subsequent medication administration.
